Goddess Maia and the Creative Energies of May

As the world emerges from the slumber of winter, May arrived with a (slow) burst of energy and vitality. It is heralding the arrival of spring in all its glory. In the tapestry of ancient mythology, May is interwoven with tales of renewal, growth, and the creative forces of nature. At the heart of these myths stands the goddess Maia—a figure of profound significance whose influence spans cultures and civilizations. She is a true creative inspiration and I’m looking forward to the exploration of the Goddess Maia and the Creative Energies of May. She is revered in both Greek and Roman mythology.

Maia is depicted as a beautiful, shy, somewhat recluse goddess living on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. Her name derives from the Latin word “maius,” meaning “greater,” reflecting her role as a nurturing and life-giving figure. Even though she avoided the company of gods, she gave birth to Hermes, the son of Zeus. She also raised another of Zeus’ sons, Arcas, the son of Callisto after Zeus’s wife, Hera turned Callisto into a bear.

Maia is seen as one of the Pleiades. The Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters, are a prominent star cluster located in the constellation of Taurus. I just LOVE how myth and astrology dance so beautifully… Yes, we entered Taurus Season on the 19th of April. The Pleiades have been associated with stories and legends in various mythological traditions worldwide. They are often depicted as a group of sisters or maidens. Among these sisters is Maia, who holds a special place in Greek mythology and the skies. The month of May is also named after her. However who is Maia and why does she hold such a wonderful space in our lives still?

Mythological Origins of the Pleiades and their connection to Artemis

In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were the daughters of the Titan Atlas and the Oceanid nymph Pleione. As Atlas was tasked with keeping up the sky for all eternity, he couldn’t protect his daughters. He had many children, mostly daughters, the Hesperides, the Hyades, the Pleiades, and the nymph Calypso who lived on the island of Ogygia. Maia is said to be the oldest and most beautiful of the Pleiades. As they were born on Mount Cyllene and that is where they became the companions and students of Artemis.

Artemis’s association with the Pleiades adds depth to their mythological significance, highlighting the interplay between celestial bodies and the divine realm. The story of Artemis’s intervention to protect the Pleiades underscores her role as a benevolent deity who champions the cause of women and defends them against harm.

In art and literature, Artemis is often depicted alongside the Pleiades, emphasizing her connection to these celestial maidens. Artemis’s presence in depictions of the Pleiades reinforces her role as their guardian and protector. They were subsequently, ensuring their eternal safety and preserving their legacy in the stars.

By incorporating Artemis into the mythological origin of the Pleiades, we gain a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of Greek mythology and the roles played by its diverse cast of deities. Artemis’s association with the Pleiades enriches their story as the goddess of the hunt and guardian of young maidens. It adds layers of meaning and symbolism to their celestial journey.

Maia and The Creative Energies of May

Maia is depicted as a shy goddess who kept to herself and lived on Mount Cyllene. In my mind, she was quite the magical character. A wise and nurturing divine feminine who looked after the earth. She raised both Hermes and Arcas. She was connected to the earth and often spoken about in the same breath as Gaia.

Maia’s association with Hermes underscores her facilitation of communication between the mortal world and the divine realm. As the mother of the divine messenger, she symbolizes the conduit of communication and knowledge. She also signifies the Earth’s hidden mysteries and magic as she resides in a deep shadowy cave in Mount Cyllene.

This also attributes to the lessons on cyclical living where periods of growth are followed by times of darkness and introspection.

Another great reason for us to look at the cyclical aspect to life and the elemental nature of the seasons. Astrologically this is also a time of creativity. As we move from Taurus into Gemini season in May, we get to connect to our curiosity and love for learning.
