Be Creative and Beat the Corona Blues

Do you also find yourself going ‘WTF is actually happening’, every now and then? The world currently seems a bit like a prelude to the movie ‘I am Legend’. We are now heading for 7 weeks since my children have seen their friends or, in fact, anyone else but the odd delivery person. What a strange situation. However, we’ve found such solace in projects that allow us to be creative.

You see it everywhere (once you’ve turned off the news of course). There is some brilliant content available. From musicians creating rooftop concerts to video edits and crazy challenges, some people are doing. Friends are sharing their favourite music albums and songs and finding connections on social media.

To be creative may mean something else to each of us. My creativity might not seem that creative to you or vice versa. The word ‘creative’ is defined as using or producing original or unusual ideas. Therefore, I think we can all agree that being creative can provide us with an outlet for daily stresses. Especially in these times.

There is in fact, some great evidence of how creativity has helped people overcome their circumstances. Nathan highlights quite a few success stories coming from times where things have been tough in his blog, Could Coronavirus be the Game-Changer?

To be creative, you have to think a little outside the box, let go of the rules a bit and face your fears in a way. I’ve enjoyed the amazing things musicians, comedians, artists, actors, etc have come up with, from home.

Taking the ‘busy’ out of life allowed us to try some new things and create some interesting stuff.

Creativity For Survival

In times of survival, we often need to fall back on our creative skills. As we face novel problems, we need to come up with novel solutions.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Albert Einstein

Many people are currently left unable to work. Small businesses are the ones that take strain. Therefore, the rise in creative ways to earn money is inevitable. With very little support from anywhere and from a culture where you need to make a plan when things get tough, the need to be creative is growing by the day.

My husband is also self-employed. He is a tradesman and very good at what he does. I see his work as small works of art. For him, for example, it’s been tough not working for almost 6 weeks and he’s found some pretty cool ways to pass the time and create. Making a gorgeous outside table from old scaffolding planks and poles. A bird feeder from off-cuts of wood, a butcher’s block from bits and pieces around and grow some vegetables.

The children have really been amazing. Although they are not doing as much school work as they maybe should, they have learnt some great life lessons. They have gone and made their first YouTube video in support of our good friend’s business, Some-Things, created Power Points and artwork, played Badminton, made fire, etc.

We all have a choice as to how we are going to come out of this situation we were put in. Yes, these times might be stressful and hard financially, but we can build relationships and strengthen family bonds.

So why not focus on what you can create? What puts the fire in your soul?

You have the choice to create your world. We are living in this amazing time where we get to choose how we go forward.

Having worked in virtual work for the past few years, I’m so glad that the benefits and ease of working from anywhere in the world is becoming more and more apparent to various business models.

The benefit of this is that you can really shape your surroundings to be the best version of yourself.
